BIO

Susan Birnie is the Curriculum Specialist for Mathematics for Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia. She has taught for 33 years. She has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master degree in early childhood education. Her range of teaching experience runs from kindergarten to middle school and the university level. She is a frequent presenter of professional development such as Lenses on Learning for elementary principals and the 1999 TIMSS Video Study for secondary teachers and administrators. Currently, she is president of the Virginia Council of Mathematics Supervision. Since 1988, Ms. Birnie has been involved with projects supporting math specialists as change agents at the elementary level. She was a member of the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition Committee that initiated the proposal for the Virginia Mathematics Specialist endorsement for teachers of K-8 grades.
